Suiattle River

Propelled by melting ice from nearby Glacier Peak, the river falls through a lush forest surrounded by tall, snow-capped mountains. There are many fine class III rapids in a 13-mile run that drops 420 feet. The highlight of the whitewater is Class IV Hurricane Rapid, a no nonsense cataract with souse holes, boulders, logs, and plenty of drop. A Suiattle River trip affords a great way to see the North Cascades while experiencing the thrills of whitewater rafting.

Meeting Place: We will meet at the U.S. Forest Service launch site, 7 miles north of Darrington on Highway 530. The meeting place is on the northwest corner of the Highway 530 bridge over the Sauk River. From Arlington: Take I-5 to exit 208 (State Route 530, Arlington-Darrington Exit). Follow 530 east 32 miles to Darrington. In Darrington, turn left at the 4-way stop, continuing on 530. Go 7 miles and look for a left turn just before you cross the bridge. If you cross the bridge, you have gone too far. From Rockport: head south on Route 530. Go 11 miles and cross the bridge over the Sauk River. Take an immediate right.
